Mandy + Jack: Picnic Themed Engagement Session

Last Friday we had the pleasure of finally meeting Mandy & Jack for one of the funnest engagement sessions ever! Several years back we started dabbling in model and fashion photography and what we loved most was being able to tell a story and getting to use our creativity with this type of photography. So, when Mandy suggested a themed engagement session we were beyond excited to work out the details with them. Their idea was a Hamptons nautical/picnic theme. Pulling that off meant finding a setting that didn’t scream Colorado but could really be anywhere USA. We found the perfect location right here in Castle Rock that has areas of trees and tall grasses and then really cool sand bars with huge boulders. To say these two were easy to photograph is an understatement! They were so easy going and so much fun! Looking through the photos I don’t think anyone could guess it was Colorado in the middle of wintericon smile photoWe were hoping for a warm afternoon and fortunately besides the wind that kicked up midway through we lucked out with a really nice day. So excited to share these pics and couldn’t resist posting one of Jack’s awesome jumping skills. Cannot wait for their wedding this May and a big thank you to Cydney at Stiletto Events for recommending us!

Kristen + Tyler: Lair O’ the Bear Winter Engagements

We LOVE photographing engagement sessions! And as long as it’s not freezing out, winter can be a beautiful time of year for them. About a week ago we met up with Kristen and Tyler at Lair O’ the Bear in Idledale for their engagement session. This was the first time we’d gotten to photograph at that location in the winter and while it’s already a favorite spot of ours, it’s the perfect place this time of year. The snow along the half frozen river made for the most gorgeous backdrop! It’s pretty in the summer but doesn’t even compare to this! Kristen and Tyler are still in the midst of planning all their wedding details but wanted to start the process with an engagement session. They were referred to us by another local photographer, Kelsey Haffner, who takes the cutest baby & newborn picsicon smile photoWe are so thankful she sent them our way! Kristen and Tyler were so much fun to work with. They weren’t afraid to climb in a tree or walk on the frozen river (even after Michelle partway broke through the ice). You can tell they have fun together and make a great couple! We got some great pictures of these two and are excited to share them. Kristen and Tyler we’re so happy we got to work with you and wish you guys all the best with your wedding!!

The Jones Family: Winter Family Portraits at Chatfield

2014 will be a year of changes for Volkel Image and we couldn’t be more excited! Over the years we’ve had a lot of fun getting to photograph such a wide variety of events & sessions and we realized how much we love portraits so this year we’ll be focusing a little more on that- family, senior high, engagements etc. And while I’ve been the primary shooter and Michelle has been my assistant for almost every session over the years, another change to this year is that she’s going to be taking on the primary role a little more while I get to have fun playing assistant. Since we rarely have two cameras other than weddings and engagements, Michelle hasn’t really had the opportunity to ever photograph a family session so this was her first time getting to do so. I did take a few images as well but this entire post is just of her images. My buddy Landon and his family were kind enough to be our first test subjectsicon smile photo I’ve known Landon for several years and we even photographed he and Katy’s wedding back in 2007! They now have two adorable kiddos, Brianna & Rylan, who were so good that afternoon. We could not have had a nicer winter day with temps reaching almost 60 degrees- definitely didn’t feel like the end of January in Colorado. Chatfield Botanic Gardens is always a great location for families with the animals on the property to entertain the kids and it was fun to go back since we hadn’t photographed there in quite some time. We had a great afternoon with these guys and I think Michelle got some pretty good images for her first family session! Here’s some of our favorites from the day.

The Gall Family: Wonderland Lake Family Portraits

Fall is my favorite time to photograph and especially for family portraits- the warm colors this time of year can’t be beat. Last weekend we headed up to Boulder to meet the Gall family at a location we hadn’t been before, Wonderland Park. I’m so glad we were able to take advantage of the last of the leaves and the perfect weather that afternoon. This was actually our second time working with the Gall family. We had the pleasure of working with them back in 2010 when Sawyer was just a little guy and since then they’ve added another adorable little boy to their family, Avery. The boys actually did really well that afternoon and I love the reaction we got from them while throwing pebbles into the lake and playing with the leaves. We had a really good time getting to take these pictures for them. They have such a cute family and it was so cool to see how well Sawyer is doing and growing since the last time we saw him. Sara and Trent thank you for inviting us to capture these for you!

Ashlyn + Tyler Winter Park Wedding: The Lodge at Sunspot

Labor Day weekend marked the end of our 2013 wedding season with Ashlyn + Tyler’s wedding in Winter Park. Our season ended much like  it began- with a destination wedding. Yes the wedding was right here in Colorado, but for the couple and their guests it was a little ways to get here. Ashlyn + Tyler are Texas natives and met while on a ski/snowboard trip here so when it came to planning their big day, the Colorado mountains were the perfect choice. Of course in typical Colorado fashion- particularly Colorado MOUNTAIN fashion- the weather decided to have a bit of an identity crisis the day of the wedding. It rained on and off most of the day but I’m so glad they agreed to keep the ceremony outdoors using the umbrellas for their guests. Fortunately the rain did stop shortly after they said “I do” and we were able to get some beautiful pictures outside with the mountain backdrop. Even though they were freezing they were such great sports and pushed through chattering teeth and allicon smile photoThey opted to do a first look before the ceremony and the emotion in that moment could be felt all the way to the other side of the camera. We can’t thank Cydney from Stiletto Events enough for recommending them our way and like usual she outdid herself with all the gorgeous details and planning that went into their wedding. Congrats Ashlyn + Tyler and thank you for allowing us to be a part of your special day!!

Aubrey + Cameron: Wedding at Castle Cliff Estate

What I love most about running a photography business is the people we’ve met over the years. Folks that either because of our vocations, age differences or any number of other reasons, we never would have met otherwise. To say that Aubrey & Cameron are an amazing couple would be a huge understatement. From the moment we were introduced we knew we were going to LOVE working with these guys. Of course they are one of the most adorable couples you could ever meet but on top of that they are super sweet just like all their family and friends! They were married two weeks ago at a new venue in Sedalia- Castle Cliff Estate. The location is absolutely gorgeous! And if the site itself wasn’t pretty enough the amazing and talented Cydney Johnson of Stiletto Events and Oakes Fields Florist made it even more beautiful with all the details that went into their wedding. Did I mention details?!? Aubrey’s dad MADE the arbor they stood under for the ceremony and that custom cake topper from Kelley Kakes- I want to get married again just to have one made for usicon smile photoYou might remember that these are the two who mountain bike & dirt bike- both of which are part of my life’s obsession. Of course when they mentioned they had custom dirt bike jerseys for all the groomsmen I was only too happy to add that to the day’s photos. Oh and I cannot forget to mention the coolest get away car ever- a Lamborghini! It was a surprise from Aubrey and the family and Cameron’s reaction was priceless! I could go on and on and on about this wedding but there’s way too many pictures to share so pull up a chair because this post is going to be longicon smile photoCongrats Aubrey + Cameron and may God Bless your marriage!!!! We are so happy you chose us to capture this day for you!

Idledale Family Portraits: Kooi + Wyant Family

Back in high school I would have never thought that some day I would be photographing some of my classmates FAMILY’S, and cute ones at that. I’ve known Morgan and Andrea since high school and it was so awesome to catch up with them and photograph their families. It’s amazing how time flies after high school and to see that we all had families of our own. We meet at Lair O’ the Bear and once again it did not disappoint, it was gorgeous and we had perfect weather. And with the sketchy weather forecasts we’ve been getting lately we didn’t know if it might pour rain on us or not. The only snag of the day was when Andrea put down her purse in a field and we didn’t realize until the end of the shoot, but low and behold some nice colorado hikers said they had seen it and told us exactly where to look, purse saved! The kids were such little angels and had some of the best posers (future models perhaps?) and the husbands..well they were too. Great people, cute kids and no lost purses makes for some great photos, Enjoy!
