In some places of the country abandoned buildings and salvage yards may be in plenty of supply but for some reason Denver apparently isn’t a fan of leaving things unkept. Off the top of my head I can think of less than a handful of abandoned buildings in the area and when it comes to utilizing them for photography well I’m not sure if I could even name one that would be possible to even get into (not even to attempt illegally trespassing into). When Joann contacted us with her idea of photographing in a junkyard we didn’t have any idea that finding one to use would be just about as impossible as finding an abandoned building- but fortunately not entirely impossible. We were so excited when we finally found a salvage yard that was kind enough to allow us to use their property for our shoot. Joann is just getting her start into the modeling world and after working with her just one time I have to say that she is a real natural. She’s not only beautiful but a very sweet person as well- we were so glad we had the opportunity to work with her! Joann’s sister and husband also came along for the shoot and we had a great time with all of them- even got a few shots of Joann and her husband together! It was a fun day, although a bit muddy, but we got some great shots for her portfolio and even took one with the cutest junk yard cat who followed us around all afternoon. Here’s a few from our day.

I’m not exactly someone who was thrilled to go to school. Went to high school because I had to and the same with college. So when I jump at the chance to actually “learn” something that says a lot about me. Well, give me a chance to learn something photography related and I’m there! Back in September I heard about a small workshop that was put together by the folks at VIP Photography Workshops. The workshop was focusing on headshots- something I really haven’t done much of so I signed up. Mark Alison instructed the class and it was nice to learn a few new things. The class was a little different than I thought it was going to be. Rather than using flash for the indoor shoot we used continuous light and a bounce. For non photographers that may not sound that interesting but when it comes to lighting, the source matters. It was a fun learning experience and nice to walk away with a new way to use lighting. Here’s just a few pics I took from the workshop- not too bad for my first attempt. Thanks to Mark Alison for teaching the class and the girls from VIP Models who modeled for us that day.
About six months ago Michelle and I started writing down all these crazy ideas we had for photo shoots. We had so many of them that trying to keep track anymore was useless unless we actually wrote them down to go back to. One of the things we really wanted to do was tell a story through our images in an editorial like format. And, when we got connected with Alexis we knew she would be perfect for this role considering that besides being a talented model she’s also an actress…and photographer and… well basically surrounded in the arts. Our idea was to start the story with a light mood that changes with the entrance and exit of a door- and it’s up to the viewer to imagine what happened in between while we tell the story at the beginning and the end. We were very fortunate to have a wonderful makeup artist/hair stylist, Sarah, help us make the whole thing come together. The funny thing about it was that in our preparation for the shoot, Michelle and I were hoping that we might just have a little rain in between to add to the mood for the second half. And, as luck would have it right after we finished the first half of the shoot, it started to rain. It definitely added to the messy hair & makeup look we were going for and made for some cool reflection shots. We had so much fun with this idea and hope we’ll get a chance to work with Alexis and Sarah again because they were both awesome to work with! Here’s some of the images from the day. They are in order to get a sense of the story- enjoy!
